Room 9 Kewpie Boat Cruise

Room 9 were treated to a wonderful trip around the Tauranga Port and Harbour on The Kewpie yesterday.
Maya Stone’s dad, Brandon is the skipper who carefully navigated us near to the huge container ships, the busy fishing boats and all along and up close to the action going on in the port.

Tauranga Port and Kingfisher Boats Visit

“Lets get on the bus!” said Room 9. We were so excited to be going to the Port of Tauranga and Kingfisher Boats. We were lucky it was a sunny day. Unfortunately we were held up by road works and we were a bit late to arrive.
When we got to the Rata St gate Eion, our bus driver met us to show us around the port.
The first thing we saw was a big shed which was supposed to have a lot of butter in, but it had already been loaded onto a ship. Then we drove around the front to see the cruise ship, Volendam. It had 1800 passengers on board.
Next we went around to see all of the logs. There were THOUSANDS of them. Each log had a code on it, which told us all the information about that log, like where it came from in the forest. Some were green (treated) and others had bark on them.
We saw some enormous machinery along the way. We saw log grabbers, loaders, trucks, tall cranes and a special machine for loading the trailers onto the back of the trucks.
We also saw the boat that took Mr. Dallas to Antarctica, it was called the Spirit of Enderby. It was quite small compared to the cruise ship. It had a bright orange lifeboat on it, which looked like a submarine.
We saw a big ship being loaded with logs and another one, which was about to leave. It had 100,000 logs on it!
As we drove around we saw train carriages being unloaded and we drove around the hazardous area where there were dangerous liquids such as oil, petrol and even dishwashing liquid.
Finally Eion drove us back to the Rata St gate. He hopped off and we quickly drove to Kingfisher Boats.
At Kingfisher Boats Mr. Bertelsen showed us how he designs the boats. He draws them on the computer. The aluminium gets cut out and it looks like a jigsaw puzzle. His job is to put it together. Some of the machines we saw to help him were the guillotine and the press, which bends the aluminium.
We were very lucky to be taken down to his show yard where he had some boats. We were able to go on one boat. Inside the boat there were three bedrooms, cubbyholes for storage, a kitchen and a toilet with a shower in it! It was very cool! Mrs. Rice really wanted it!!
After a very busy morning we hopped back on the bus. Mr. Broadhurst kindly let us have lunch at a park on the way back. We learned a lot when we went on our visit to the Port of Tauranga and Kingfisher Boats.

Recently all the children had the opportunity to explore and solve maths problems at the “World of Maths” afternoon. There were lots of “hands on activities” the children enjoyed doing.

Matakana Island Visit

On Friday the 23rd of March the Junior School went to visit Matakana Island on the car ferry. We had beautiful weather and calm waters. A wonderful time was had by all.

Electrical Box Creations

Room 9 have been learning about electricity. We had to design a box to have a light in it. We were learning about circuits and switches. We had to draw plans of our creations and simple circuits to make our lights work.
We think they are amazing.

Tauranga Art Gallery Visit

Room 9 had a wonderful visit to the Tauranga Art Gallery. We were learning about All Black landscapes and how artists produce abstract art work.

Bubble Fun

A group of children who have been working with Miss O’Connor, our student teacher were lucky to have some fun bubble blowing today. They had read a story about blowing bubbles and decided to try bubble blowing for themselves. What huge bubbles they made!
We look forward to reading their book.
