We have had a great start to the year in Room 8. The class is made up of 20 Year 2 children, with 11 girls and 9 boys. A special welcome to Hugo who has come from England and Jacob who has moved from Whangamata.
Children are keenly looking forward to going on an overnight camp at Blair Lodge at the beginning of March.
One of the things children have been enjoying is learning tennis skills from tennis coach Steve.
It’s been hot, so everyone loves going swimming. Having the air conditioning in our rooms has been wonderful.
The class has been very busy studying how to be fire wise. They have also been using box models to create some terrific fire engines. Children worked together and helped eachother. They studied pictures of engines and came up with some great designs. In the end they painted them the correct colours. Everyone has been amazed by how wonderfully they have turned out.
The three junior classes met together under the dome for a folk dancing afternoon with the parents. Everyone got involved, quickly learnt the steps and enjoyed trying the circle, partner and line dances. The cameras were capturing the fun moments. We are a very clever and coordinated lot. Maybe you’ll see us on ‘Dancing with the Stars ” when we are a bit older.
During the last week we have been learning about our bodies and how we breathe. We learnt about “Air to Live”. I think we have some doctors and nurses in our class. View the slide show below and see how clever we all are.
The whole school enjoyed a show put on by a theatre group. They taught us to “REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE and COMPOST” our waste and rubbish. It was such a well presented show and everyone listened attentively. Three of our school kids were in the “Waste Wise” show competition.
The first part of the term we spent studying sound and asked ourselves “How is sound made?” and “How do we hear sounds?” We made some very flash rubber band guitars.
Thank you to everyone who has helped their children to prepare a poem to present to the class. The children all expressed themselves well and a group excelled at the finals. Some photos of these children appear below.
The site has been cleared for the new junior playhouse. The children are keenly waiting for this to be built by Mr Power and his helpers. The plans have been drawn up and it looks like it will be a great place to play.
The Junior classes have started a PMP (Perceptual Motor Programme). It’s a fun active experience for the children and works to improve such things as coordination, balance and eye tracking. A group of parents willingly assist at the stations twice a week. The children are thoroughly enjoying the challenges. The teachers really value the support from all the parents too.
