Matakana Island Ferry Trip

As part of our unit on Boats we went for a ferry ride across to Matakana Island.  We got to travel on the barge with cars and a truck.  We had our morning tea on Matakana Island while we waited for the ferry to come back and get us.  On the way back to Omokoroa we went across to Motuhoa Island to pick up a small truck.  The ferry is very busy transporting people and vehicles across the water.

Year 1 Camp

We went to the Lazy Tramper for our Year 1 camp.  We stayed there for one night!  During our time there we did lots of activities such as weaving, BMX riding, crayon rubbings, pumice pets and boat making.  We went for a fun waterfall walk and some of us even jumped in! Brrr….

The next day we went to McLarens Falls and sailed our boats before heading to the hot pools.  It was a fun camp.

Thank you to all the parents who helped make it such a wonderful memory.

Room 6 – 2012

We are a Year 1 class of 13 children.  We love learning and playing together.  Read on to see what we have been doing in Term 1 2012.

Rainforests

Rainforest presentation by Educate Me. We all had a great time and learnt a lot about the Rainforests, animals, birds and creatures.

We enjoyed the activities and getting to see the actual length of a Giant Python! 8m!

South Africa

We have all had a great time learning about South Africa. We have learnt a few words in Zulu and Afrikaans. We tried and enjoyed biltong (dried meat), boreworse (type of spicy sausage), milk tart (a desert), koeksisters (sweet deep fried treat) and jelly-tots (lollies). We found it very interesting learning about some of the native people, the wild animals and the different living conditions in Africa. Mrs. Yeatman knew a lot about Africa because she used to live there when she was younger.

Although we became fond of the Springboks and their rugby…we still hope the All Blacks win the World Cup!

In our whole school production “Whirlwind Rugby World Cup Tour” we were the Zulu’s, representing South Africa…hope you enjoy our dance =)

Fire

We really enjoyed learning about fire for the past few weeks. We were very lucky to have some firefighters come and show us their smoke house. We know that when we hear our smoke alarms ringing, we need to GET DOWN, GET LOW and GET OUT FAST.We all went home and talked to our parents about a safe meeting place in the case of a fire.

We all really enjoyed visiting the Greerton Fire Station. We saw the different fire trucks, the firemens clothes, the station, and our favourite part was getting to sit in the fire truck and spray the hose!

It has been really fun and we are now confident that we are Firewise Kids!

Freaky Friday

Swimming Sports

We had a great time at our Junior Swimming Sports. All of the children enjoyed showing their friends and parents what they can do in the pool. As well as improving our swimming and confidence in the pool we have been learning about safety in and around the pool. We love swmming and are always trying our best to improve our skills.

Harold comes to visit…

We were all so excited to see the Life Education Van because we knew that we were going to meet Harold! We have learnt all about the things that our bodies need such as food, oxygen, water, shelter, clothes, friends, love, sleep, exercise, safety, and to be clean. We have learnt about some of the healthy fooods that our bodies need as well as the importance of having friends. We know that we need to “be a friend to have a friend”. Here is a picture of our circle of friends in room 6. We are working hard to be good friends.
