February 4th, 2011 by room5Welcome back to a new year in Room 5! Room 5 is now the Year 5/6 class, beginning with 26 students.
There are a lot of activities in store for us this year – camps, swimming, tournaments, competitions, Year 6 businesses… plus lots of learning!
The first day of school saw us creating a HUGE puzzle of a ’5′ – working together as a team! It looks awesome!
Let’s keep up the fantastic work throughout the school year!

Congratulations Kylie!!
December 2nd, 2010 by room5Well done to Kylie who gained a merit award in the Newspapers in Education Short Story 2010 awards. This is a national competition with over 400 entries. Kylie was judged in the Bay of Plenty area first (by Jo, picture below) and then sent to a national judging panel. Her story ‘Year of the Crazy Mouse’, which featured two parts – in France and in New Zealand was a delight to read and was full of fun, interesting writing and imaginative detail!! – All true though!!
An assembly was held for Kylie, as this is an award that is special and only happens once a year!
Congratulations Kylie!!
The poppies have popped!
November 14th, 2010 by room5

Back in Term 1 we learnt all about the ANZACS and how the Flander’s Poppy represented them.
We planted seeds and left them growing outside in a specially made box by Mr Lowes.
They have taken almost 3 terms to flower and now we are so excited to see such awesome flowers outside our class!
They are so beautiful and made us think about the WWI and WWII soldiers and their efforts.
Pet Day Fun
October 31st, 2010 by room5

On 22nd October we held our school Pet Day. The children chose to create from a range of creations – Sand Tray Gardens, Vaseline Saucers, Aqua Jar, Bread-face creations, Plastercine creations and Fruit/Vege creations. They all worked extremely hard and produced amazing results!
The afternoon was full of judging of animals – so there were lots of things to look at! Georgie even ‘borrowed’ a puppy, Poppy, from the SPCA – who was on her best behaviour and was gorgeous!! An amazing day had by all!
Hong kong visitors
October 21st, 2010 by room5

On Wednesday 20th October the Year 5/6′s had some visitors through the Kuaka Programme. They were from the American International School in Hong Kong and were all 15-16 years old.
They shared lots of interesting information about their country and culture – giving us gifts and showing us how to make origami frogs!
After sharing, they went off with the Year 6′s down to the Jess Road estuary to finish planting in the area. After lunch we sang songs, the senior boys did an awesome haka and we all had lots of photos!
Both cultures learnt a lot about each other and we look forward to seeing more of the Kuaka visitors in future years!

Space Shuttle Construction
September 29th, 2010 by room5Over the last few weeks of Term 3, we have been constructing NASA Space Shuttles to a scale of 1:50. The children worked extremely hard in teams, designing, measuring, constructing and decorating their own unique shuttles. The shuttles had to include booster tanks, a fuel tank and the shuttle. During the construction, the children learnt a lot about space and how we get there for research.
Check out our amazing journey in the slide show!
