    Connecting around the World!

Picture 5Room 5 is becoming more and more connected with the world!

Mrs T signed us all up to www.epals.com, a site where we can connect with others around the world.

We are all very excited to be emailing an international school in Indiana, USA!

Through this we will be able to share our culture, share New Zealand to the world and help us to become connected, collaborative learners!

    Watch this space!

    Empanadas!

P1010890P1010889P1010893ThiP1010898s term we are learning about Argentina.

Part of our learning was about food. From this Mrs T gave out the challenge to create original Empanada fillings. In teams of 4 or 5, the children chose a range of meat, fruit, vegetables, herbs and spices to try out.

Each group made 30 mini-empanadas which were judged by the,  Mrs Thompson, Mr Joe, Mrs Webster and Mr Broadhurst.

There were a range of sweet and savoury and they were all DELICIOUS!!

The winning team were Stella, Samuel, Javan, Keely and Daniel with their combination of apple, berries, cinnamon, chocolate and pears! Yummy!!

    New World Supermarket Visit

DSCF4117DSCF4113The Year 5/6′s have been learning about Food and Nutrition – looking at labels, sugar and fat content of different foods and drinks.

As part of this unit, we visited Brookfield New World and looked at a range of foods and labels. We were surprised by the amount of sugar in some foods and cereals!

Thanks to Naomi from Foodstuffs for talking to us and organising our trip – as well as giving us a $50 voucher to buy our own food!

Watch out Mum and Dad’s cupboards!!! The food police are about to visit!…

Freaky Friday comes to Room 5!

Check out the amazing creatures that emerged out of Room 5 on Freaky Friday!

Ghosts, ghouls, vampires and generally creepy looking critters filled the classroom!

    Well done Room 5!

    Room 5 Rocks Rotorua!!

The Year 5/6′s had their camp in Rotorua on the 22-25th March. It was so awesome in fact, that we made a video (well, Mrs T did…) about some of the things we did.
Check out the main page for photos and a blurb about what we did.

    P1020817

Welcome back to a new year in Room 5! Room 5 is now the Year 5/6 class, beginning with 26 students.
There are a lot of activities in store for us this year – camps, swimming, tournaments, competitions, Year 6 businesses… plus lots of learning!
The first day of school saw us creating a HUGE puzzle of a ’5′ – working together as a team! It looks awesome!
Let’s keep up the fantastic work throughout the school year!

P.S: Check out these awesome videos – just gives everyone an idea of how the teaching of children has evolved from both the kids and teachers views..

The end of a fabulous year…..

    Wow Room 5!!
What an awesome year we have had!!! Lots of fun times, lots of learning and a lot of friendships and smiles!!
I have loved 2010 with all your cheeky smiles and personalities.
I hope you all have a fantastic Christmas with your family and I can’t wait to see you all back at school next year!!
    You rock Room 5!!
    Mrs T.

    Congratulations Kylie!!

Well done to Kylie who gained a merit award in the Newspapers in Education Short Story 2010 awards. This is a national competition with over 400 entries. Kylie was judged in the Bay of Plenty area first (by Jo, picture below) and then sent to a national judging panel. Her story ‘Year of the Crazy Mouse’, which featured two parts – in France and in New Zealand was a delight to read and was full of fun, interesting writing and imaginative detail!! – All true though!!

An assembly was held for Kylie, as this is an award that is special and only happens once a year!

    Congratulations Kylie!!

    The poppies have popped!

PA260184PA260188PA260185Back in Term 1 we learnt all about the ANZACS and how the Flander’s Poppy represented them.

We planted seeds and left them growing outside in a specially made box by Mr Lowes.

They have taken almost 3 terms to flower and now we are so excited to see such awesome flowers outside our class!

They are so beautiful and made us think about the WWI and WWII soldiers and their efforts.
