We are having a go at painting using our mouths only, to try and get an idea of what it must be like to not have the use of hands or feet. This is part of our “World of the Disabled” mini-topic.
Comments from the children include: “It’s hard!”, “I don’t know how to do it.”, “I’ve mucked mine up. Can I start again?”, “It’s really fun.”
Here are some of us in action! (click on the link below)
It was a fantastic learning experience designing our own jandals to meet criteria we wrote. We ended up with so many different designs! Then we looked back at what we had done and thought about what we did well, what didn’t go so great, and what ideas we had to improve next time. We really enjoyed learning in a hands-on way and having room to show our creativity.
The winners of our competition were: 1st Sewing Jandal, by Georgia Banyard; 2nd Spring Jandal, by Joost Van Gorp; 3rd Winter Jandal, by Olivia Van Breda.
Welcome back to Term 2. I hope you all had an excellent holiday and are feeling refreshed again.
I want to thank those of you who helped out in so many ways last term. Parent help is very much appreciated by myself and the children in Room 4. If any of you wish to offer some of your time in the classroom this term, please let me know, or drop me a note.
Our topic for this term is NZ: Then and Now. We will begin by looking at ANZAC Day. We will move on to study NZ’s origins and geography, our early history, the flora and fauna, famous kiwis, and our NZ culture.
Our virtues for this term are KINDNESS and FORGIVENESS.
Students will have weekly homework that will include: spelling, mathletics (students should aim to get at least 1000 points per week.), and additional homework tasks.
Please encourage your child to be responsible for their learning, including homework and library books. Our library day is Thursday.
Paula Dunton will continue to work with target children. She will also take an extension science class on Tuesday afternoons.
Slippers may be worn inside from now on if required. Please send along a box of tissues if you are able. These are very useful over the cooler months.

Assessments and Reports
Last term you received the results of your child’s beginning of year tests. If you have any difficulty in understanding the printouts, feel free to drop in and see me or phone me at the school.
At the end of this term you will receive a written interim report on your child’s progress. Parent-teacher interviews will be held in week one of Term 3. ’t hesitate to contact me earlier if you need to.
I wish you and your child every success this term.
We had a great visit by a person from the Blind Foundation of NZ. She brought Gill, a trainee guide dog, with her. We learnt about how the dogs are trained, what they do to help their new blind owners, and how much it costs to train a guide dog. The children really enjoyed meeting Gill up close after the talk was over.
Our North Cluster Swimming Sports were a great success, with a number of students going through to the WBOP competition. It was very impressive to see so many of Room 4 having a go at events that challenged them and to observe their support of each other and their sportsmanship. Well done Room 4 and many thanks to the parents who helped us with transport and marshalling duties on the day.
We had a great time at our Year 5-6 camp at Lake Whakamaru. It was a great time of challenge, getting to know new friends, and having a whole heap of fun, fun, fun! Many thanks to all the parents and teachers who helped out. Check out our photos below…
