Sgt Jacko’s Road Safety Visit

Thanks to Dan the Puppet-man and his very talented puppeteeP5050127rs – Radar and Matt,P5050103 we wereP5050147 entertained and educated with a Road Safety show.  Sgt Jacko, Porangi the Pukeko, 3 excitable possums and a few other characters, made sure that we knew the road rules and consequences of not following them.

We all learnt a lot and through their amazing skills, reminded ourselves of what we should be doing around roads.

Safe Walking -Rooms 6, 7 & 8

Safewalking to wharf 30 April 2010 001On Friday 30th April Rooms 6, 7 & 8  left school to walk single file along Plummer’s Point Road towards the wharf and estuary. It was going to be a long way. Mr Barthow led the long snake and wore an orange fluorescent vest so he could easily be seen by any traffic coming towards us. He made sure that we stayed right over on the grass verge so we were safe.  Will called out “Watch out for that sneaky driveway”, as we passed each of the letterboxes.  At one part the grass verge got so narrow we had to cross the road to a wider place to walk. We each looked right, left and right again as we looked and listened for any cars. Each of us had to decide if it was safe to cross. We linked hands with a friend as we smartly crossed the road.Safewalking to wharf 30 April 2010 024

After about half an hour we crossed the road again and arrived at the beautiful beachside reserve. We were tired. What a beautiful sight as we looked across the calm and peaceful estuary. We sat, relaxed and munched away on our big lunches. We were hungry.

Now it was time to head back to school. More safe walking. Listening for traffic. Looking for cars. Looking right. Looking left and then right again.Safewalking to wharf 30 April 2010 011 Some needed plasters. The trip back to school in the long snaky line seemed slower and longer as we stopped and waited for those who had shorter and tired legs. Mr Barthow congratulated us on walking 4.2 kilometres which is a long way for 5 and 6 year olds on a lovely warm autumn day.

Thanks to all the mums, dads and grandmas who helped us be safe walkers. It was a great day!

All the Room 6, 7 and 8 pupils keenly showed how confident they were in the Junior SwimmingSports held at the school pool on 30 March.

Year 3/4 Waihi Camp

Room 9, 10 and 11 have recently returned from an amazing camp at Waihi Beach.Room 9 Camp2

We learned a lot about the local area and its gold-mining history, as well as how gold is mined today. We rode on the old Waikino Train and went on the beautiful and historic walk through the Karangahake Gorge. The tunnels were exciting!

We were very lucky with the weather and managed to swim in the surf each evening. The parents who accompanied us were brilliant, as were the children. We hope next year’s camp is as good as this one!

Red Puppy Appeal Week

Picture 1This week, Omokoroa No’1 School was lucky enough to have Wendy with labrador puppy Gill to inform us about Red Puppy Appeal Week. Gill is a one year old puppy, who is about to begin his training as a Guide Dog.  He will then go to a blind or partially sighted person to help be their eyes.

The children donated a gold coin onto the Guide Dog picture. It costs the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind
over $22,500 to breed, then train a guide dog.

Thanks to Wendy, Gill and the RNZFB  and we hope that our contribution helps towards raising more amazing ‘Red Puppies’!
