Junior Swimming Sports 30 March 2010 007Junior Swimming Sports 30 March 2010 013

All the Room 6, 7 and 8 pupils keenly showed how confident they were in the Junior SwimmingSports held at the school pool on 30 March.

They were washing machines, floaters and kickers as they enjoyed themselves swimming widths and lengths. Lots of parents and grandparents came out to watch.

We are very proud of ourJunior Swimming Sports 30 March 2010 011 students and it’s great to see their confidence in the water growing, seeing them being safe in water and developing skills on which to build their swimming strokes.

Wheel Days ~ 22&26 March

The School Councillors organised ‘Wheel Days’ for both the Senior and Junior schools during the week. It was a lot of fun, excitement and everyone had a great time!  Check out the Wheels Day Movie below to see just how awesome these days were.

Year 3/4 Waihi Camp

Room 9, 10 and 11 have recently returned from an amazing camp at Waihi Beach.Room 9 Camp2

We learned a lot about the local area and its gold-mining history, as well as how gold is mined today. We rode on the old Waikino Train and went on the beautiful and historic walk through the Karangahake Gorge. The tunnels were exciting!

We were very lucky with the weather and managed to swim in the surf each evening. The parents who accompanied us were brilliant, as were the children. We hope next year’s camp is as good as this one!

Red Puppy Appeal Week

Picture 1This week, Omokoroa No’1 School was lucky enough to have Wendy with labrador puppy Gill to inform us about Red Puppy Appeal Week. Gill is a one year old puppy, who is about to begin his training as a Guide Dog.  He will then go to a blind or partially sighted person to help be their eyes.

The children donated a gold coin onto the Guide Dog picture. It costs the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind
over $22,500 to breed, then train a guide dog.

Thanks to Wendy, Gill and the RNZFB  and we hope that our contribution helps towards raising more amazing ‘Red Puppies’!

Year 1/2 Camp at Blair Lodge

Blair Lodge Camp Sue 4 March 2010 007Blair Lodge Camp Sue 4 March 2010 137Racing along the BMX trip, climbing under nets, balancing over the swinging pole were all part of the challenges that added to the excitement of the recent Year 1 and 2 Overnight Camp at Blair Lodge. Other experiences included trying archery, going on a scavenger hunt, creating artist folded birds and going for a cool swim in the clear waters under the waterfall.

Everyone slept in the cabins, lodge, games room and tents after singing to all the wonderful parents who had assisted with all the days’ activities.  Blair Lodge Camp Sue 4 March 2010 113We all stepped back in time as we dressed in olden day clothes at the Katikati museum and gained understanding of life long ago. It was soon time to relax and eat lunch at the Katikati bird gardens. The highlight was the ride around on the golf cart. Pigeons even loaded on our arms.

It was time to head back to school, unpack, home to relax and reflect on the terrific camp. Thank you to all those who made our camp such a success.

St Patricks Day

P3130020To celebrate St Patricks day, children from Tina Peet School of Dance came to show us their Celtic Dancing.

We are very lucky to have Chelsea and Gabrielle (and Mum, Jo) to show us their own dance too.

Thank you to all the dancers.

Year 7/8 Wellington Camp

On the 22 March, the Year 7/8 classes boarded the bus by 7.15 Monday morning, excited and ready to get going. First stop wasIMG_2741 Waiourou Army Museum. After an educational tour everyone got to dress up in Army and military uniforms. Anyone that didn’t follow instructions had to do push ups!!
After a good night’s sleep that first night, we ventured into Wellington city. Te Papa was first stop. So many things to see, but the colossal squid had to be a big favourite. Next it was over to Parliament, to be met there by Tony Ryall and then into the debating chamber to see our MP’s in action. We then headed back to Te Papa to view the Pompeii exhibition. It was very moving seeing the cast figures of real people that had been caught in the Mt Vesuvius eruption.
IMG_2751IMG_2759Movies. Camera. Action…. was the call on day three, as all room 1 students had important jobs so that we could film the show – This Is Your Life. Billy T James was interviewed and Jacob truly looked the part.
That day we all had the opportunity to lay down a soundtrack for a video game. Do take the time to go online to E TV Studio and see the work your IMG_2765child did. It was a fantastic day where everyone learnt so much. That night, after a lovely roast dinner meal we headed over to the H2O extreme pools where everyone flew down the hydroslides, and had fun in the wave pool and on the Tarzan swing.
Upon awaking on Day 4, the rain was falling heavily and the Wellington wind had picked up. Our trip to Somes Island had to be cancelled and instead we visited Weta Cave to learn about Peter Jackson and Richard Taylor’s team at Weta Workshop. Lunch was over hill in Seatoun at the spot where the Wahine ship went down. After lunch we headed into town for a quick shopping spree and then a ride up the hill on the cable car. That night it was a camp concert, which our camp mothers started with arocking version of ‘Tonights going to be a good, good night’.
It was a busy morning getting packed up and on the bus on Friday morning by 9 am. A long trip home but everyone was tired andIMG_2754 ready to head home to their families.
A big thank you to all our fantastic parents for making our Wellington camp a success and such a lot of fun.
